Low-Maintenance Garden Transformation
Overview
This Salisbury garden transformation involved revitalising an overgrown and underused outdoor space into a clean, welcoming, and easy-to-maintain garden tailored to the client’s lifestyle. Working from a design created by Louise Hnatow Garden Design (louisehnatowgardendesign@gmail.com), the project focused on improving accessibility, introducing structured planting areas, and creating practical seating spaces connected by flowing pathways and natural textures. The completed garden now offers a calm and functional outdoor environment that is both visually appealing and simple to maintain throughout the year.
Location
Salisbury, Wiltshire
Project Type
Low-Maintenance Garden Transformation
Key Features
Accessible pathways, gravel garden, curved borders, seating areas, pergola feature
The Challenge
The original garden had become heavily overgrown and difficult to navigate, with dense weeds and unmanaged planting leaving the space largely unusable. The client wanted a low-maintenance solution that would improve accessibility while creating a more inviting and practical garden for everyday use. The design also needed to soften the long narrow shape of the garden and introduce structure, movement, and visual interest without creating a space that would require intensive ongoing maintenance.
The Process
Transforming an Overgrown Space into a Functional Garden
Working from the detailed plans produced by Louise Hnatow Garden Design, the project began with the full clearance of the overgrown garden to reveal the site’s potential and prepare the space for construction.
Garden Clearance & Preparation
Extensive vegetation and overgrown planting were carefully removed throughout the garden to create a clean foundation for the new layout. Once cleared, the space could be accurately set out in line with the proposed design, allowing the new pathways, seating areas, and planting zones to take shape.
Pathways & Gravel Installation
Curved hoggin pathways were installed to improve accessibility and guide movement naturally through the garden. The flowing layout softens the shape of the space while creating a calm and informal atmosphere that complements the surrounding planting. Decorative gravel surfaces were introduced throughout the scheme to provide a practical, permeable, and low-maintenance finish suitable for year-round use.
Pergola & Seating Area Construction
A bespoke timber pergola was constructed to create a focal point within the garden and provide a sheltered seating area for relaxation and entertaining. Sandstone paving beneath the structure introduces texture and contrast while helping to define the entertaining space within the wider garden layout.
Planting Areas & Finishing Details
Curved planted borders were formed throughout the garden to introduce softness, colour, and seasonal interest around the pathways and seating spaces. Sett edging and carefully shaped borders help maintain clean lines while ensuring the garden remains easy to manage over time.
The Results
The completed transformation has turned an overgrown and impractical space into a beautifully balanced low-maintenance garden that is both accessible and highly functional. The combination of flowing pathways, gravel textures, structured planting, and timber features creates a welcoming outdoor environment that feels calm, spacious, and easy to enjoy throughout the seasons. The finished garden successfully delivers the client’s vision for a practical yet characterful outdoor space while remaining simple to maintain for years to come.
