Hard Landscaping

Hard landscaping covers the built elements of your garden, from patios and paving to steps, paths, raised beds and other structural features that shape the layout and improve how the space works. Working from Salisbury, we take on residential projects across Wiltshire, the New Forest, Winchester, the South Coast and parts of Surrey.

How hard landscaping structures the garden

A garden can have plenty of space and still be awkward to use. Routes may feel unclear, changes in level can interrupt the flow of the space, and one area can feel disconnected from the next.

This is where hard landscaping makes the difference. Patios create usable outdoor space, paths and steps make movement through the garden easier, and raised beds or retaining features bring more structure to the layout.

Done well, the garden becomes easier to use and better connected to the house. It gives the space structure that lasts and a result that looks properly considered.

What the service includes

Hard landscaping can shape the garden as a whole, or improve one area that needs better structure, access or definition. The right combination depends on the garden, the levels, how the area is used and the finish you want to achieve.

Patios and paving

A patio often becomes the main usable area in the garden, so its position, scale and finish matter. Paving needs to sit comfortably with the house and the rest of the layout, whether the aim is dining, seating or creating a better connection between the house and garden.

Ground preparation matters just as much as the surface. Old slabs, turf or other materials may need to be removed, levels need to be handled properly, and the base needs to be built to last if the finished patio is going to hold up well over time.

Steps, paths and access through the garden

Paths and steps do more than connect one point to another. They affect how the garden is approached, how easy it is to move through, and how naturally different areas work together, especially where there are changes in level.

This is often where practical detail matters most. Gradients, drainage, footing and the conditions on site all need to be thought through before the final finish goes in.

Raised beds and retaining features

Raised beds and retaining features can bring stronger structure into the garden and help organise the layout more clearly. In some spaces they frame planting areas or seating zones. In others, they help manage levels and give the garden a cleaner, more ordered shape.

The scale, material and position all make a difference here. Done well, these features feel built into the garden rather than added on afterwards.

Decking and pergolas

In some gardens, decking or a pergola can be the right way to create usable space or introduce structure without making the garden feel heavy. Decking can work particularly well on uneven ground, while pergolas can help define seating areas, routes or focal points within the space.

Material choice, layout and positioning all need thought. These features have to work with the house and the surrounding garden if the result is going to look natural.

How hard landscaping works
Initial conversation
We start with a call or email to understand the garden, the kind of change you want to make, and whether the work forms part of the initial garden design or focuses on one part of the space.
Site visit
A site visit gives us the chance to look at the garden properly and talk through the work in more detail. That includes the layout, levels, access, drainage and how the built elements will need to work within the garden.
Quote and approval
After the visit, we provide a written quote with a clear scope of work, along with any relevant assumptions or exclusions. Once the quote is approved and the deposit is in place, the work can be booked in.
Groundwork and build
From there, the work moves into preparation and construction. Depending on the project, that may include site clearance, excavation, base preparation, drainage work and the installation of patios, paths, steps, raised beds or other structural features.

Why clients choose Love Landscaping for hard landscaping

Hard landscaping works best when layout, levels, drainage and finish are thought through together. Patios, paths, steps and retaining features should feel part of the garden, not added later.

That is where experience matters. Some clients come to us as part of a full garden project. Others want to improve one area. Either way, the work is planned with the house, the layout and the long-term use of the garden in mind. We also source materials through trusted local suppliers, helping us keep a closer eye on quality, finish and availability.

The result is clearer advice, one point of contact and a finish that feels properly part of the garden. If you are planning hard landscaping work, we would be happy to talk through the space and the right approach for the result you want to achieve.
